We were supposed to celebrate Ash Wednesday this past week. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent. It is a 46 day period where Christians focus on self-denial in preparation for Easter.
It is a time when we remember that we came here with nothing, that all we have is given to us by God, and we are thankful. When the ashes are placed on your head the pastor will often say "Repent and believe the Gospel"
This week we are going to take a look at the story of Nicodemus. Nicodemus comes to Jesus and asks what he must do to enherit eternal life. Jesus answers him saying that "you must be born again!"
What does it mean to be born again. I think it can be simple as denying yourself and following Jesus.
It is a call to deny yourself, and to believe the Good News of Jesus Christ. Though we did not have our Ash Wednesday service as a community together, we can still mark this as a time to focus on that call of self denial.
It means setting aside all the things that make you what the world sees as you, your goals, your accomplishments, your titles, your reputation, your stuff. Then saying "God, my value doesn't come from all that my value comes from you. So I'm going to stop chasing after that stuff, and start chasing after you!"
I hope you'll join us for worship if you are able at 10:00 am on Sunday Morning in person or on through Facebook Live
